Understanding Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity is the concept that neurological differences are natural variations of the human brain rather than deficits or disorders. What is Intersectionality?

Intersectionality is a framework for understanding how multiple identities, such as race, gender, disability, sexuality, and socioeconomic status, intersect and create unique experiences of privilege and marginalization. This concept recognizes that individuals don’t experience discrimination or advantage based on a single identity, but rather through the complex interplay of all their identities simultaneously.

The Origin

In 1989, legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality” after observing that unique forms of discrimination affected Black women in ways that racism or sexism could not explain separately. Her groundbreaking work demonstrated that overlapping identities create distinct experiences that require specialized understanding and targeted solutions.

Intersectionality in Practice

In healthcare and organizational settings, intersectionality helps us understand that a Black autistic professional, for example, faces challenges that are different from those experienced by white autistic individuals or neurotypical Black professionals. These intersecting identities create unique barriers and distinctive strengths that must be recognized and addressed holistically.
